In order to curb the number of emails I'm getting about UMDumper, I've decided to produce this page to list the more common issues that I'm emailed about. If you don't see your problem listed here, feel free to contact me!

Updates: Modern GEN firmwares work with UMDumper, the PSP-3000 does indeed work, No PSP-Go

Does UMDumper work on the PSP-Go?
No, The PSP-Go hasn't been hacked to run custom firmware yet.
And UMDumper is a bit pointless without a UMD drive...

Does UMDumper support the new PSP-3000 model?
Yes it does, so long as you have custom firmware installed.

When I try to start UMDumper, I get the message "The game could not be started (80020148)"
UMDumper cannot run on official Sony firmware. In order to use UMDumper you must replace the official firmware with custom firmware such as the M33 or GEN firmwares.

It can also mean that you've not set a NO-UMD mode in the CFW recovery menu.

I've downloaded UMDumper, where should I put it?
The EBOOT.PBP file should be in MS0:\PSP\GAME\UMDUMPER\ (Where MS0: is the drive for your memory stick)

UMDumper crashes as soon as I insert the disk!
This is usually caused by old versions of custom firmware. Be sure to upgrade to the latest available version.

When I try to insert a Video/Film UMD, UMDumper just freezes! What's wrong?
UMDumper currently doesn't support non-game UMDs. This is due to limitations imposed on the newer firmware. The 1.5 firmware doesn't have this problem but 1.5 is restricted to older dumpers.

When I try to play the mini-game in 0.3.0, it flickers and is unplayable!
This is a performance issue I need to address. To play the game, stop Mp3 playback first then start the game and it should be playable.

Part-way through the dump, UMDumper freezes and my PSP switches off!
The most common cause of this is dirty disks. If a part of the UMD is dirty/damaged the software will keep trying to read it over and over untill the PSP gives up and turns itself off. Check your disk is clean and free of defects.

Why is CSO mode so slow?
CSO uses ZLib compression technology to get the images small. While this reduces IO strain, it is a big impact on performance. Compression requires a lot of CPU power, which isn't something the PSP has an enormous amount of. It should get better in future versions though.

What is the difference between the CSO levels?
CSO Level 1 compresses the disk faster and has the least performance impact while playing the game, however it has the lowest reduction in size. CSO Level 9 gives the greatest reduction in size, however the compression is slower and it has a heavier impact on in-game performance. CSO Level 5 is a comprimise between the two, and what I would recommend for most games.

The English version of UMDumper works fine for me, but Language X has bugs. What gives?
This is caused by translation errors. If the translator moves any of the formatting tags around then it can cause the program to crash at runtime. Sadly I don't have time to check every translated version for these problems, so when you come across them please let me know.

Will you help me with my PSP problem?
No. Nothing personal, but I have work to do. Try Psp-Hacks.com and the QJ.Net PSP Forums
